Ecuadorian citizens enjoy visa-free or easy access to over 90 countries and territories. The biggest highlights are free travel across most of South America and visa-free short stays in the Schengen Area. The main exceptions are North American destinations such as the United States, Canada and Mexico, which require visas.
South America
Ecuador is an associate member of Mercosur and part of the Andean Community. Ecuadorian citizens can travel to Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay using just a national ID card in many cases. The Mercosur Residence Agreement also makes it easier for Ecuadorians to live and work in member states.
Visa-free travel to Europe
Since 2018, Ecuadorian citizens have been able to visit the Schengen Area for up to 90 days within any 180-day period without a visa. Spain is the most visited destination, thanks to language and a large Ecuadorian community. Border officers may ask for a return ticket, accommodation details, travel insurance and proof of funds.
When the ETIAS system launches, Ecuadorians will need to register online before travelling to Europe.
United Kingdom
Ecuadorian citizens need a visa to visit the UK. Apply online for a Standard Visitor visa and attend a biometrics appointment. Check the UK government website for the current position, as UK visa rules for some Latin American nationalities have changed in recent years.
United States
A B1/B2 visa is required for the US. Applications involve the DS-160 form and an interview at the US Embassy in Quito or the Consulate in Guayaquil. Waiting times can be long, so apply early.
Mexico
Mexico introduced a visa requirement for Ecuadorian citizens. Travellers holding valid US, Canadian, UK, Japanese or Schengen visas, or residence in those places, may be able to enter Mexico without a separate Mexican visa. Confirm with the Mexican Embassy before travelling.
Canada
Canada requires a visa from Ecuadorian citizens. Some Ecuadorians who have held a Canadian visa in the last ten years, or who hold a valid US visa, may be eligible for an eTA when flying. Check eligibility first.
Central America and the Caribbean
Several Central American countries have introduced visa requirements for Ecuadorians, partly to manage migration routes. Check each country's current rules before travelling overland or by air.
Asia and beyond
Ecuadorians can visit some Asian countries visa-free, such as the Philippines and Malaysia for short stays, while others offer e-visas. Turkey has offered e-Visa access.
Travel tips
- Keep your passport valid for at least six months for travel outside South America.
- Carry proof of accommodation, return tickets and funds when visiting Europe.
- Do not overstay in Schengen countries. Violations can lead to bans.
- Check the Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry for updates.
Mistakes that cause problems at the border
Most travel problems linked to Ecuadorian Citizens come from small oversights rather than refusals. Airlines deny boarding more often than immigration officers do, usually because a passport is too close to expiry, an online authorisation was never approved, or the traveller cannot show an onward ticket. Another common issue is mixing up stay limits, especially when a trip covers several countries with different rules. Before you leave, write down your permitted length of stay, the date you must exit, and the documents each border may ask to see. Keep digital and printed copies, since phones die and airport Wi-Fi fails at the worst moments.
Final word
Ecuadorians can travel freely across South America and Europe. For North America, early planning is key. Always confirm the latest rules with official sources.
