Visa Requirements for BD Citizens (November 2026)

Julkar Nain · · 3 min read

Bangladeshi citizens face more visa requirements than travellers from many other countries. The Bangladeshi passport gives visa-free, on-arrival or simple online access to around 40 countries and territories. For most popular destinations, including the Gulf, Europe and North America, a visa must be arranged in advance. With good preparation, however, many Bangladeshis travel successfully every year.

Visa-free and visa on arrival destinations

Some of the easiest destinations for Bangladeshi travellers are close to home or in small island nations:

  • Bhutan: entry permits are issued on arrival for Bangladeshi visitors, though Bhutan charges a Sustainable Development Fee.
  • Maldives: a free visa on arrival for tourists with a hotel booking and return ticket.
  • Nepal: visa on arrival, with free visas often available for first-time tourist visits by Bangladeshis.
  • Sri Lanka: online ETA.
  • Others: several island nations in the Caribbean and Pacific, and some African countries.

India

India is the most visited foreign destination for Bangladeshis, for medical treatment, tourism, family visits and business. Applications are made through the Indian Visa Application Centres in Bangladesh. Medical visas require a letter from the Indian hospital. Processing and availability of tourist visas have varied in recent times, so check the official IVAC website for current services.

Southeast Asia

Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia all require Bangladeshi citizens to apply for visas in advance. Thailand and Malaysia offer e-visa options. Singapore applications are made through authorised agents. Vietnam's e-visa is open to all nationalities, including Bangladeshis.

The Gulf

Millions of Bangladeshis work in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain. Work visas are arranged by employers. Workers must also register with the Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET) and receive clearance before leaving Bangladesh. Tourist visas for the Gulf are possible but often scrutinised closely.

Schengen, UK and US

  • Schengen: some embassies process visas in Dhaka, while others require applications in India or another country. Prepare strong financial and employment documents.
  • United Kingdom: Standard Visitor visa applied for online, with biometrics at the visa centre in Dhaka, Chattogram or Sylhet.
  • United States: B1/B2 visa, with an interview at the US Embassy in Dhaka.

Tips for Bangladeshi travellers

  • Use a machine-readable or e-passport with at least six months validity.
  • Keep bank statements, tax returns and employment letters organised.
  • Build travel history with easier destinations before applying to Europe or North America.
  • Avoid unofficial agents promising guaranteed visas.
  • Check the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for updates.

Mistakes that cause problems at the border

Most travel problems linked to BD Citizens come from small oversights rather than refusals. Airlines deny boarding more often than immigration officers do, usually because a passport is too close to expiry, an online authorisation was never approved, or the traveller cannot show an onward ticket. Another common issue is mixing up stay limits, especially when a trip covers several countries with different rules. Before you leave, write down your permitted length of stay, the date you must exit, and the documents each border may ask to see. Keep digital and printed copies, since phones die and airport Wi-Fi fails at the worst moments.

Final word

Travel on a Bangladeshi passport takes planning, but it is far from impossible. Start with nearby destinations, keep documents honest, and confirm rules with official embassies before you travel.
