Visa Requirements for Finland for Indian Citizens (November 2026)

Julkar Nain · · 3 min read

Finland draws Indian travellers for the Northern Lights in Lapland, the midnight sun in summer, Helsinki's design scene and a growing tech and education sector. As a member of the Schengen Area, Finland requires Indian citizens to hold a Schengen visa for short visits.

Which visa do you need?

For trips of up to 90 days within any 180-day period, Indians apply for a short-stay Schengen visa (type C). It covers tourism, family visits, business meetings and conferences. A Finnish Schengen visa also lets you travel to the other Schengen countries during its validity.

Apply to Finland if it is your main destination, meaning the country where you will spend the most time. If your time is split equally, apply to the country you will enter first.

Students, workers and family members joining a resident need a Finnish residence permit, which is applied for through the Finnish Immigration Service's online system and is a different process.

Where to apply

Finland's visa applications in India are handled through VFS Global visa centres on behalf of the Embassy of Finland in New Delhi. You book an appointment, submit documents and give fingerprints in person. Fingerprints are valid for 59 months, so frequent travellers may not need to give them every time.

Documents for a Finland Schengen visa

  • A passport issued within the last ten years, valid for at least three months after you leave the Schengen Area, with two blank pages
  • The completed application form and recent photos
  • Travel medical insurance with at least €30,000 cover for the whole Schengen Area
  • Return flight reservation and hotel bookings, or an invitation letter
  • Bank statements for the last three to six months and recent income tax returns
  • A no-objection or leave letter from your employer, or business and student documents
  • A cover letter explaining your trip and day-by-day itinerary

Fees and processing time

The standard Schengen visa fee is €90 for adults, with lower fees for children, plus a service charge from the visa centre. Decisions usually take around 15 calendar days but can take longer in peak months. You can apply up to six months before travel, and no later than 15 days before. For Lapland trips in winter, apply early.

Tips for Indian applicants

  • Show consistent income rather than large last-minute deposits.
  • Make your itinerary realistic. Lapland trips should include clear transport and accommodation details.
  • Book refundable hotels and flight reservations until the visa is issued.
  • Include previous Schengen, UK, US or Japanese visas to show a good travel record.
  • Explain any unusual details in your cover letter.

Multiple-entry visas

Under the EU's cascade rules for Indian citizens, travellers who have used previous Schengen visas lawfully can receive longer multiple-entry visas, sometimes valid for two years and then up to five. This makes repeat trips to Finland and Europe much easier.

Upcoming changes

The EU's Entry/Exit System now registers non-EU visitors' fingerprints and facial images at the border. Visa holders like Indian citizens are not affected by ETIAS, which applies only to visa-exempt travellers.

Final word

A Finnish Schengen visa opens the door to Lapland and much of Europe. Apply on time, submit complete documents and confirm the latest checklist with VFS and the Finnish Embassy before your appointment.
