Visa Requirements for Japan from Philippines (November 2026)

Julkar Nain · · 3 min read

Japan is the most popular long-haul holiday for many Filipino families. Tokyo's energy, the temples of Kyoto, Osaka's food and Hokkaido's snow all draw visitors from Manila and Cebu. Filipino citizens need a visa for Japan, and the process has a few features that are unique to the Philippines.

Applying through accredited agencies

The Embassy of Japan in Manila and the consulates in Cebu and Davao do not usually accept tourist visa applications directly from individuals. Instead, Filipinos apply through accredited travel agencies, which submit applications on their behalf. Choose an agency from the embassy's official list.

Japan has also introduced an eVISA for some nationalities and purposes. Check whether Filipino applicants can use the eVISA route for your type of trip.

Documents for a tourist visa

  • A passport valid for your trip, with blank pages
  • Visa application form and a recent photo
  • PSA birth certificate, and a marriage certificate if married
  • Daily schedule in Japan
  • Bank certificate showing your balance
  • Income tax return or Form 2316
  • Certificate of employment, or business registration if self-employed

If someone in Japan is inviting you, you may need additional documents from your host, including a letter of guarantee.

Single-entry and multiple-entry visas

A single-entry tourist visa usually allows a stay of up to 15 or 30 days. Japan also offers multiple-entry visas to Filipinos who meet certain criteria, such as previous trips to Japan, good financial standing, or a history of travel to G7 countries. Multiple-entry visas can be valid for several years, which saves time on future trips.

Processing time

Processing generally takes around five to eight working days after submission, plus any time the agency needs. Apply at least one month before travel, and earlier for cherry blossom season.

Common reasons for refusal

  • Inconsistent or incomplete documents
  • Insufficient funds or unexplained deposits
  • Unclear travel purpose
  • Previous immigration issues in Japan

Refused applicants usually have to wait six months before applying again for the same purpose.

Arriving in Japan

Fill in Visit Japan Web before arrival to speed up immigration and customs. You will be fingerprinted and photographed. Carry hotel bookings and return tickets, as officers may ask to see them.

Working in Japan

Japan offers routes for Filipino workers, including the Specified Skilled Worker programme and technical intern schemes. These require job offers, skills tests and Japanese language exams. They are separate from tourist visas, and recruitment should always go through licensed agencies.

Travel tips

  • Get a Suica or Pasmo card for trains.
  • Carry cash. Some shops do not accept cards.
  • Use a JR Pass only if your route makes it worthwhile.
  • Respect local etiquette on trains and in temples.

How to check the rules yourself

Entry rules connected to Japan from Philippines can change with little notice, and third-party websites are often months out of date. The most reliable approach is to check three sources in order: the official immigration or visa portal of the country you are visiting, the website of its embassy or consulate in your country of residence, and your airline's travel document checker, which uses the same database airport staff rely on at check-in. If the three disagree, follow the strictest one and contact the embassy directly. Do this two to three weeks before departure, then once more a few days before you fly.

Final word

Filipinos are approved for Japanese visas every day. Work with an accredited agency, submit clean documents, and check the embassy website for the latest requirements.
