Georgian citizens have seen their travel options expand significantly over the past decade. The biggest change came in 2017, when the European Union granted Georgians visa-free access to the Schengen Area. Today, the Georgian passport allows visa-free or easy entry to around 120 countries and territories.
Visa-free travel to the Schengen Area
Georgian citizens with biometric passports can visit Schengen countries for up to 90 days within any 180-day period without a visa. This covers tourism, family visits and short business trips. It does not permit work.
The EU has a suspension mechanism that allows it to reinstate visas if a visa-free country no longer meets certain conditions. The EU has used this mechanism to restrict some Georgian travellers, starting with holders of diplomatic and official passports, and has discussed wider measures. Check the current status before you travel.
Border checks in Europe
Visa-free entry does not guarantee entry. Border officers may ask Georgians for:
- A return ticket
- Hotel bookings or an invitation letter
- Proof of sufficient funds
- Travel insurance
The Entry/Exit System now records fingerprints and photos, and ETIAS, an online authorisation, is expected to be required for Georgians once it launches.
Turkey, Armenia and Azerbaijan
Georgians can travel to Turkey visa-free, and in some cases with just an ID card. Armenia and Azerbaijan are also accessible without a visa, though crossings between Armenia and Azerbaijan are not possible, so plan routes through Georgia.
Russia
Russia has relaxed some visa requirements for Georgian citizens in recent years. Check current rules with official sources before travelling, as policies have changed several times.
United Kingdom
Georgian citizens need a Standard Visitor visa for the UK. Apply online and give biometrics at the visa centre in Tbilisi.
United States and Canada
A B1/B2 visa is required for the US, with an interview at the US Embassy in Tbilisi. Canada also requires a visitor visa, applied for online with biometrics.
Other destinations
- Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova: visa-free entry, subject to current conditions.
- Middle East: the UAE and Qatar have offered easy entry to Georgians.
- Asia: Georgians can visit several countries visa-free, including Malaysia and Thailand, while others offer e-visas.
Tips for Georgian travellers
- Use a biometric passport for Schengen travel.
- Carry proof of accommodation and funds when entering Europe.
- Do not overstay or work illegally. Violations affect future travel and can put Georgia's visa-free status at risk.
- Check the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for updates.
How to check the rules yourself
Entry rules connected to Georgian Citizens can change with little notice, and third-party websites are often months out of date. The most reliable approach is to check three sources in order: the official immigration or visa portal of the country you are visiting, the website of its embassy or consulate in your country of residence, and your airline's travel document checker, which uses the same database airport staff rely on at check-in. If the three disagree, follow the strictest one and contact the embassy directly. Do this two to three weeks before departure, then once more a few days before you fly.
Final word
Georgians can explore Europe and many neighbouring countries with ease. The UK, US and Canada still need advance visas. Rules can shift, so confirm with official sources before you travel.
