Visa Requirements UK for Australians (November 2026)

Julkar Nain · · 3 min read

The United Kingdom has long been a magnet for Australians. Some come for a holiday, others for a working year in London, and many to reconnect with family roots. Australian citizens do not need a visa for short visits to the UK, but they do need an Electronic Travel Authorisation, and there are excellent options for longer stays.

Visiting the UK as a tourist

Australians can stay in the UK for up to six months as visitors. This covers tourism, visiting family, attending meetings and conferences, and short courses. Visitors cannot take paid work or access public funds.

The Electronic Travel Authorisation

Since January 2025, Australian citizens have needed an ETA before travelling to the UK. Key details:

  • Apply through the official UK ETA app or GOV.UK website
  • You need your passport, a photo and contact details
  • A decision is usually given within three working days, often much faster
  • The ETA is valid for two years or until your passport expires, for multiple visits

Travellers passing through UK airport transit areas have at times needed an ETA too. Check current rules before booking connections through London.

Arriving in the UK

Australians can usually use the ePassport gates at major UK airports. Carry proof of your return ticket and accommodation in case officers ask.

Youth Mobility Scheme

The Youth Mobility Scheme visa lets Australians aged 18 to 35 live and work in the UK for up to three years. The UK expanded the scheme for Australians as part of a free trade agreement, raising the upper age limit and lengthening the stay. No sponsor is required, but you need to show savings.

UK Ancestry visa

Australians with a grandparent born in the UK may qualify for a UK Ancestry visa. It allows you to live and work in the UK for five years and can lead to settlement. You must be at least 17, intend to work, and support yourself without public funds.

Skilled work and study

Australians can apply for Skilled Worker visas with a sponsoring employer, Global Talent visas, or Student visas. These follow the UK's points-based immigration system and involve health surcharges and fees.

Dual British-Australian citizens

If you are also a British citizen, you should enter the UK with a British passport or with a certificate of entitlement in your Australian passport. You do not need an ETA as a British citizen.

Travel tips

  • Apply for your ETA at least a week before travel.
  • Get travel insurance. Australia and the UK have a reciprocal healthcare agreement, but it covers only some situations.
  • Register with Smartraveller.
  • Track time if you visit often, as frequent long visits can draw scrutiny.

How to check the rules yourself

Entry rules connected to UK for Australians can change with little notice, and third-party websites are often months out of date. The most reliable approach is to check three sources in order: the official immigration or visa portal of the country you are visiting, the website of its embassy or consulate in your country of residence, and your airline's travel document checker, which uses the same database airport staff rely on at check-in. If the three disagree, follow the strictest one and contact the embassy directly. Do this two to three weeks before departure, then once more a few days before you fly.

Final word

For Australians, the UK is easy to visit and offers great routes to live and work. Get your ETA early and check GOV.UK for the latest rules.
